The Boston Grotto is a chartered internal organization of the National Speleological Society<\/a> (NSS). It was founded in 1952 for the purpose of promoting exploration, conservation, scientific study, and social activities in and about caves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grotto holds regular meetings on the first Wednesday of each month on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA. See Meeting Details<\/a> for more information.

The grotto sponsors caving trips every month, to Northeastern locations as well as other U.S. caving areas and even other countries on occasion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We host trips for all levels of caving experience, both horizontal and vertical. Beginners are absolutely welcome underground! We can supply loaner equipment and are happy to teach any needed skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of our trips are just for recreation (fun!), but we also have opportunities for vertical caving classes, cave surveying, scientific expeditions, and cave rescue training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note: to protect bat populations severely affected by White Nose Syndrome<\/a>, most of our caves are closed between October 1 through April 30. While we still host trips during this time, expect fewer options.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
